What documents are required to apply for a Hungarian residence permit?

To apply for a residence permit in Hungary, you will need a valid passport, a registered address in Hungary and proof of your livelihood. You can prove your livelihood, for example, by a bank statement and your address by a rental contract or property title.

What steps must be taken to renew the residence permit?

The renewal of the residence permit must be initiated at least 30 days before the expiration date. In this procedure, it must be proven that the original conditions for issuing the permit are still met.

How long does a passport have to be valid if I want to apply for a residence permit?

The passport must be valid for at least 90 days longer than the residence permit applied for. This means that if your passport is due to expire soon, it must be renewed before you apply for a residence permit, as the permit cannot be issued for a period longer than the expiry date of the passport.

What is the main difference between a residence permit issued for the purpose of earning an income and a residence permit issued for the purpose of employment?

A residence permit issued for the purpose of earning an income provides third-country nationals with the opportunity to conduct business in Hungary, either as sole proprietors or as part of a business association. In contrast, the residence permit for the purpose of employment enables third-country nationals to work in Hungary as part of an employment relationship, thus entitling them to work tied to a specific workplace.
